The Death of the Gated Manual Gearbox & why now is the time to buy!

The gated manual gearbox: the best kind of inconvenience.

Ask a room full of petrolheads what they miss most about “old” performance cars and you’ll hear the same words repeated: feel, sound, involvement. Near the top of that list is the manual gearbox, and the most special of them all? A gated manual. That mechanical click-clack as the lever slides through a metal gate. The deliberate movement. The sense that you’re operating something engineered, not just selecting another gear. It’s a small detail, but as we know, with these cars, details matter… and it’s disappearing.

Why gated manuals (and manuals in general) are dying out…

The reasons are simple, and none of them are about fun.

Performance and lap-time culture: Modern dual-clutch and automated gearboxes are brutally effective. They’re faster, smoother, and easier to drive quickly.

Regulations and economics: Emissions targets, production costs, and global demand all push manufacturers toward fewer drivetrain variants. Gearboxes such as ZF’s wonderful 8-speed automatic are bought in bulk by manufacturers and generate cost savings, whilst still offering a smooth driving experience, so become an obvious choice in the board room.

Also, if only a small percentage of buyers choose a manual, it’s hard to justify engineering and homologation costs.

So the manual option disappears.

Why now is the time to buy.

Here’s where it gets interesting: as the industry moves forward, the enthusiast doesn’t always follow suit. When something becomes rare and it delivers a unique experience, it stops being “old tech” and starts being the makings of a future classic. Gated manuals sit right in that sweet spot:

· They’re increasingly rare

· They’re deeply tactile

· They’re tied to a specific era of analogue performance cars

For enthusiasts, that matters more than a 0–60 time. There are endless options for a car that accelerates quickly, that we have no interest in. So performance is no longer the main criteria for enthusiasts.

There is now a large disparity in the values of certain cars that have a manual gearbox option.  In recent months we’ve sold outstanding examples including:

• A Gen 1 Lamborghini Gallardo

• A Ferrari 360

• An Audi R8 V10

• An Aston Martin V12 Vantage

Manual examples of these cars consistently command at least a 20 percent premium over their paddle-shift alternatives. All of these cars have at least a 20% premium over their flappy paddle alternatives, and for good reason.

We predict that over the next 5-10 years, we’ll see this price disparity get closer to 50%, as put simply, they are the ones that the enthusiasts will want to own.
